About the Journey

The shamanic journey is a method to access your deep inner knowing and to open yourself to the unseen realms of Spirit.  Through the shamanic journey, people have for centuries been able to find their personal connection with the Divine for healing and insight.  Through opening the doors of perception, we are able to meet our helping Spirit guides and cultivate a rich inner world with unlimited resources.  Traditional cultures the world over use the drum as an escort into these realms.  The monotonous beat helps your mind access the deep meditative or trance state and find your way through the veil between the seen and unseen realms.

I like to think of this veil between the worlds as a garden gate.  On this side of the gate is your ordinary reality, your everyday world.  On the other side is your Sacred Garden, the land of your Soul.  Your Sacred Garden is a beautiful place in nature where you can plant things and you can weed.  It is a metaphor for your inner psychic space, the space where your soul can speak to you, and you can access the transpersonal realms of Spirit.  Traditional cultures have called it the Other World and the Dream Time; some call it transcendental states of awareness, or Non-Ordinary Reality.  It is the place of expanded consciousness.  It is in this space that the journey takes place.

Some people “see” their journeys in vivid color, others “sense” it or hear it, still others simply find a place of peace inside and get a download of information or healing.  No two journeys are alike, just as no two people are alike.  The goal is to let it in, however it comes for you.

A word about imagination:  Many people worry that they are just “making it up” when they begin to journey.  And, I assure you, that is definitely what you are doing!   Your imagination is the bridge between the seen and the unseen worlds.  When you begin your journey, you will use it to get you there.  Your imagination is a gift that needs to be cultivated and respected.  It is through our imagination that we dream the world into being, and we create ourselves.  Your imagination will help you open your consciousness, and it will allow you to interpret what you see there.  Never discount your imagination — instead use it actively to help you heal and become ever more yourself.  When you are journeying, you will begin to notice the element of surprise — when something happens that you did not expect and you did not create.  That’s when you know you have entered the Dream Time, through the doors of your own imagination.

Intention is an important part of the journey.  For this first journey, the intention is simply to cross the veil, find your Sacred Garden, and ask your helping Spirits for Power, Protection, and Support.

Power is personal power, the kind that comes from knowing your own Soul and being connected to Spirit.

Protection is from anything that would take away your Power.

Support begins with noticing how the elements support you already: breath of air, blood of water, body of earth, and spirit of fire.

You can do this journey over and over again, always asking for connection and support, always holding the intention in your heart of going deeper into your own life and opening to your soul’s awakening.  As you continue to explore these realms you will learn to create intentions to focus your journeys.   Journeys are not typically guided, as it’s a conversation between you and spirit.  You may enter with the intention of asking for healing or for insight into a particular problem or issue you’re dealing with.  When you set your intention, expect an indirect, symbolic answer that carries deeper, broader insight than our linear minds can hold.  Ask for more information about the situation, and always ask for the best outcome for the good of all creation.  The Spirits are outside of space and time, they don’t care what you do for money and can’t answer when something will happen or why something happened.  They can almost always give you more information or help you see things from a different perspective.

I like to ask, “What’s the most important question in my life right now?” and, “What is the next step in my soul’s evolution?” and, “What can you show me about this situation that seems impossible to me, what am I not seeing?”  Remember to let it in!  Don’t try to figure it out.

Before commencing on the journey, it’s important to call yourself in, from all the places where you send your energy.  We all scatter our energy in the four directions, to loved ones or our troubled past, to things we worry about and things we love.  Imagine yourself pulling all of those parts of you from all times and spaces back into your heart and your belly, back into your bones and blood, back into this moment in time and this space where you are.  Notice as you pull yourself in the feeling of being in the body, notice your muscles and your blood flow, notice how your bones nest beautifully together as you rest. Notice your organs dancing their rhythm, moving gently and in synchrony within your belly, keeping time with your breath.  Notice the vibration of your spine, the slight buzz in your toes, the steady beating of your heart.  Find yourself fully present inside your own skin.

Let the journey begin.
